The Construction of the "Constitutive Other" in Linguistic Identity Discourse: An Analysis of Persian Language Preservation Strategies in the Statements of Ayatollah Khamenei «Based on the Theory of Laclau and Mouffe»

Abstract

The Persian language, as a cultural heritage and a pillar of Iran's national and civilizational identity, has always been exposed to numerous challenges and changes over time. In the era of globalization, with the expansion of communication technologies and the increasing influence of foreign languages, serious questions have been raised about the survival and stability of this language. In such circumstances, the role of policymakers and cultural custodians in formulating effective strategies to protect this national capital becomes fundamentally important. Ayatollah Khamenei, as a thought-provoking and trend-setting leader, has established a distinctive and coherent discourse in this area in recent decades by emphasizing the concept of "cultural invasion" and its connection with the issue of language. While identifying the dimensions of the danger, he has presented systematic solutions to counter it; but the main question is what relationship do these solutions have with each other in his discursive framework and how are they organized in a semantic system? The aim of this research is not simply to collect these strategies, but rather to discover the “discursive logic” that governs them; in the sense of how the concept of “cultural invasion” functions as a “constructive otherness” and creates a chain of equivalence between concepts such as identity, independence, and resistance to make “language preservation” an identity-building project. This research, based on the theory of Laclau and Mouffe, attempts to show that the preservation of the Persian language in the leadership discourse is not simply a cultural recommendation, but an ideological act in a hegemonic battle to redefine and consolidate Iranian-Islamic identity.
