Abstract

The word, as the most dynamic linguistic unit, is a fundamental concept in the language system. It is a general concept, but has a variety of roles and structures in languages. This research has sought to answer: how is the linguistic unit of the word introduced and classified based on linguistic criteria. Of course, the answers were provided with respect to explaining the types of words in the Persian language. The aim of this research was to apply some morphological criteria of modern linguistics and explain samples of simple and complex Persian words. This research was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and its findings showed that a word is an independent unit and the structure of the word has internal integrity and no part can be added to it or separated from it, because its being a word would be lost. Also, two types of complex Persian words, derivative and compound, were introduced and analyzed. A derivative is created through the process of derivation and creates a new word with a new meaning and lexical category. Compounding also creates compound words that are divided into different classes. In a large number of compounds, the relationship between the two constituent parts of the word is of the object or adverb of the accompanying verb element, or there is a head- modifier relationship between the parts, which usually have compositional meanings. But in many cases, there is no specific relationship between the parts of the compound, therefore, its meaning is non-compositional.
