Abstract

Explaining verb inflection system in Persian and gaining a thorough understanding of it is a significant issue and it should be considered seriously in teaching Persian grammar. In this line, the present research is to answer what are the features of Persian verb inflection and how a paradigmatic approach can be used in teaching Persian verb inflection to help Persian learners acquire knowledge of it more systematically and stably. Accordingly, this research aims to explain the verb inflection and its place in teaching Persian. In this research, the descriptive- analytical method was used and the inflectional features of samples of 133 Persian verbs were studied based on new morphological approaches of Generative Grammar. In Persian verb inflection, whole verb forms are built by applying the verb inflectional features including tense, mood, aspect, and number to verb stems, which are realized usually by inflectional affixes and in a number of cases by phonetic processes. Knowledge of verb inflection, morphological elements of verb forms and their relationships as well as stable learning of them by Persian learners can help them use these verb forms grammatically in the real and communicative context. Meanwhile, introducing a paradigmatic model of teaching verb inflection along with learning the morphology of verb forms can be useful and practicable. In sum, Persian Learners’ morphological knowledge of verb forms and using paradigmatic approach in teaching Persian verb inflection, both pave the way to easier and stabler learning of Persian verb inflection.
