Abstract

This research, employing a forensic linguistics approach, analyzes discursive structures within dialogues between investigators and defendants in Iranian criminal cases. The primary goal is to identify the linguistic and discursive patterns of criminal interrogations and to articulate their pedagogical potential for developing the language and communication skills of non-Iranian learners in fields such as law, advocacy, judiciary, or police work. The study adopts a qualitative–quantitative methodology, using a corpus of authentic criminal interrogation dialogues collected through archival and field data. The theoretical foundation rests upon James Gee’s (2011) model of discourse building blocks, comprising seven elements: significance, activities, identities, relationships, politics, connections, and semiotic systems. Results reveal that the building blocks of “activities” (e.g., denial, conditional admission) and “identities” (e.g., victim portrayal) are the most frequently observed. Investigators predominantly use “relationships” and “politics” to steer the conversation. The identified discursive patterns are associated with Persian language characteristics such as indirectness and politeness levels. These findings are particularly significant for Legal Persian education, emphasizing the necessity for non-Iranian learners to grasp politeness nuances, indirect speech patterns, questioning techniques, and authoritative discourse in Persian. Pedagogical applications include the development of “Legal Persian” courseware and workshops, training in listening comprehension for interrogation discourse, the creation of simulated scenarios for law students and police officers, and the compilation of corpus-based resources for specialized vocabulary and formal syntactic structures. Ultimately, this research contributes to advancing intercultural legal communication and promoting linguistic justice.
