Abstract

In the communicative approach to language teaching, the ultimate goal is to enable effective communication. This goal is achieved when instructional materials genuinely represent the diverse and authentic functions of language within social contexts. The present study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of the communicative patterns in two textbooks, *Farsi-e Omumi 1* (from the Parsa series) and Faraz (Basic Level 2), using Halliday's (1973) framework of seven language functions. A mixed-methods, deductive content analysis was employed as the research design. After developing a reliable, operational coding scheme (Cohen's Kappa = 0.88), a census of all sentences was conducted, yielding a corpus of 1,555 sentences from Parsa and 346 from Faraz. Each sentence was coded for the instrumental, regulatory, interactional, personal, imaginative, heuristic, and informative functions, allowing for multi-functional coding. Data analysis involved the Chi-square test, Cohen's h effect size, and the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index. The findings revealed that the "informative" function was predominant in both textbooks (67.8% in Parsa and 68.2% in Faraz). However, a statistically significant difference was found in the overall distribution of functions (χ² = 83.52, p < 0.001). The two textbooks diverged in their secondary emphases: Parsa allocated a significantly larger share to the "interactional" function (14.3%), emphasizing socialization, whereas Faraz placed a greater emphasis on the "personal" function (9.8%), providing more space for individual self-expression. The "imaginative" function was virtually absent from both textbooks.
