Abstract

Storytelling and short stories, as narrative-centered methods, have a high potential to enhance second-language learning because they enable text-centered instruction, provide meaningful contexts for vocabulary and syntactic structures, and increase learning motivation. This article adopts a review-analytical approach to examine the theoretical literature and empirical evidence on this application in teaching Persian to non-Persian speakers. The theoretical foundations analyzed include Krashen’s “comprehensible input” hypothesis, Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspectives, and Bruner’s constructivist views. International applied studies and the adaptive potential for producing Persian instructional materials are also reviewed. In the methods section, a proposed lesson-design framework, sample activities, and assessment instruments are presented, and suggestions for empirical research are offered. Findings indicate that a systematic, levelled story-based program can produce meaningful improvements in vocabulary size, reading comprehension, and speaking ability and can increase learner motivation; however, cultural adaptation, appropriate text selection, and teacher training remain major challenges. The paper recommends developing a bank of levelled stories and conducting controlled pilot studies to strengthen the empirical evidence.
